I grew up in a small town in Brazil’s countryside where to observe Nature was not simply seeing a set of beautiful landscapes, animals, plants and natural elements. Observing nature was a way to forecast the weather. Workers from the farms, some known as weather prophets, used the signs of nature to predict rain and dry seasons.
Mr. Rocha was one of those weather prophets who observed the termite mound and announced: “when termites grow wings is a sign that the rain is coming.” It was also the cicadas loud shrill droning noise an indication of coming rains.
Like Mr. Rocha, there were many other weather prophets who used nature’s signs to forecast the weather. Insects and plants were references to the prediction of the rain or dry season, and to know when is the time for sowing and harvesting.
If their prophecies are beliefs or proverbs, the methods employed by weather prophets have been used along the ages, and researched by meteorologists and geographers. These masters on listening, observing the behavior of animals and changes in nature, have taught us many ways to know if the rain is coming or not.
Cresci no interior do Brasil, um lugar onde observar a natureza não era apenas ver uma paisagem bonita, animais e plantas. Observar a natureza era uma forma de prever o tempo. Fazendeiros, também conhecidos como profetas do tempo, usavam sinas da natureza para preverem a época de seca e de chuva. Sr. Rocha era um destes profetas que observava os cupins e anunciava: " quando cupim cria asa é sinal de que a chuva estã chegando." Era também o som das cigarras cantando um aviso de que a chuva estava a caminho, e assim tempor para preparar a terra para o plantio.
Como Sr. Rocha, haviam muitos outros profetas que observavam a natureza para preverem o tempo. Insetos e plantas eram referências para prever chuva e seca, para planejarem o plantio e colheita.
Se as professias deles são crenças ou tornaram-se provérbios, seus métodos têm sido empregado por muitos anos e pesquisados por meteorologistas e geógrafos. Estes mestres em escutar, observar o comportamento dos animais e as mudanças na natureza têm nos ensinado como saber se vai chover ou não.
